What Next for #WomenEd?

#WomenEd is hurtling towards its fifth birthday in May and, when we pause to reflect, we have collectively achieved so much. Five years ago, the original founders shared a collective vision of what we hoped to achieve and agreed an initial strategy to achieve this.

The vision has remained consistent and steady: to be a grassroots movement which connects existing and aspiring leaders in education. Before long we added global to that mission statement: although we had been born in England the need for #WomedEd across the world was just as relevant.

Initially it never dawned on us that we would go beyond England, so we created localised regions based on the DfE regions as this is what we knew. Since then we have exploded across UK and the globe and worked with network leaders to adapt the strategy for each country or region to account for context and the situation on the ground.

Up to this point the #WomenEd Strategic Group (Jules, Sameena, Liz, Alison, Vivienne and Keziah) have supported the English / Netherland networks as well as all our other jobs for #WomenEd – but we simply don’t have the capacity to continue doing everything required. As you know, we are unpaid volunteers holding down full-time jobs, families and other commitments. Strategically leading a community of 5000 is very different to 50,000… it’s time to make a change.

This leaves us with a dilemma. #WomenEd are not English colonialists slowly taking over the world – but it might look like it. For example, there is no @WomenEdEngland and now we think there should be.  We would see @WomenEdEngland as a country in its own right with representatives from English networks leading, just like in the other countries around the world. This network team would then in turn connect with and support the English regions.

Therefore we are calling out to current English network leaders who have the passion and the capacity to become network leaders for @WomenEdEngland.

Your role will be to liaise with the network leaders in the English regions to ensure the following happens:

• National and regional #WomenEd Events;
• Keep @WomenEdEngland and network social media accurate and active;
• Contribute to the @WomenEdEngland section of the website;
• Maintain and develop a strong vision for #WomenEd in England;
• Meet (in person or via Zoom) your @WomenEdEngland team monthly to keep communication regular and effective.
• Connect with your Strategic Lead monthly.
