A New Teacher in COVID - #Highlights2021 Reflections on #Being10%Braver

Rebecca-Sedgwick-reflections-3

By Rebecca Sedgwick

I was an NQT in 2020, so my introduction into teaching has been full of COVID restrictions and regulations. I went into 2021 with mixed emotions and reflecting back, being #10%braver has been key in remaining positive in a difficult year.

As an energetic, upbeat character, being 10%braver could be perceived as being something that would come easily to me. The reality is, it took some time. It was something that I knew how to do, but didn't feel I was able to. As a (recovering) perfectionist, I have had to learn to accept that I just cannot give 100%, especially because I have also become a foster parent this year.

I have been fortunate to work with a co-founder of WomenEd, so whilst I have been part of the cohort a short time, I have been influenced for much longer. This group of women support, encourage and advocate one another to challenge, discuss and take risks. When I think about my #Highlights21, I have discussed pay with my head teacher, I have started a middle leadership course and joined #WomenEd. I feel I am valued where I work, I have a voice and am becoming more confident in using it, I am learning to trust my instincts, which have been backed up by my increased knowledge and confidence.

Being part of the cohort has given me exposure to conversations around all aspects of women in schools and the challenges we face. For me, being 10% braver is about being an advocate and a voice.

I really look forward to continuing my journey with #WomenEd and being #10braver in all that 2022 brings.

This sounds amazing, keep it up ???? I was an NQT 2019-20 and I can't believe how much things have changed since. I'm now on SLT plus an ECT mentor and would love to know more about #WomenEd and #10%braver. Message me if there's things to get involved in or a word that I can help to spread. Proud of you xxxx
